Joining data

Sorry if this is obvious/ answered elsewhere.

I have downloaded a shape file, and census data now saved in text (tab delimited) format. How do i join the two (based on zonecode)? I have tried the add delimited text layer, but it said "the layer is not a valid layer and cannot be added to the map".

Am i barking up completely the wrong tree or just doing something slightly wrong?

In fTools, you can use "Join attributes".
I think the file has to be in dbf, but it's very easy to convert a CSV in DBF.

Tool>Datamanagement tool>Join attributes

open CSV file with Excel or Ooo and "Save as..."
