Windows Vista Installation

Postby pnmckinn on Tue Mar 03, 2009 4:36 pm

I currently have the KORE preview II version of QGIS, but wanted to update to QGIS 1.0. I see that there is not currently an ".exe" self-installer version available for Windows (any ideas when this will occur?).

It appears the only way to get QGIS 1.0 on Windows is through some online installation process. I attempted this once, but had no idea how to get QGIS installed (the website offered all of these different programs to install; very confusing for a novice ArcGIS 9.x user trying to expand his horizons).

I was wondering if someone could guide me (or provide a link to a document) on how to install QGIS 1.0 on Windows Vista using the current installation option?

Thanks,

Patrick

I read that this tutorial should work. I had already installed before I found this, so I did not try it myself.

http://sites.google.com/site/eospansite/qsig-for-windows

I see it does not specifically mention vista.

Garvan,

Thanks so much for that link! I had no problem installing QGIS 1.0. It is nice to be able to view MrSID aerial photographs again. Would you happen to know if I can transfer the downloaded files from OSGEO4W and transfer them to another computer to install QGIS? I would like to put it on my computer at work, but we still have dial-up internet. I tried downloading the files from the OSGEO4W installer, but it was taking too long.

I understand this is possible, but did not try it myself.

This is a copy of a post by Gavin Fleming

A slightly modified solution to installing QGIS from OSGeo4W (solved my problem below):

1) Download the whole OSGeo4W tree as shown on http://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo4w/wiki/InstallFromCD using rsyc, wget or other appropriate tool. This needs to be done only once for your organisation. (Make this available to other users via CD or file server, in which case get them to copy it locally.)

3) Run osgeo4w-setup.exe

4) Choose options as per http://sites.google.com/site/eospansite ... or-windows

Except: After choosing Advanced install, choose Install from Internet, leave root directory as default, then select your downloaded folder as Local Package Directory (e.g. E:\software\osgeo4w), then choose your internet connection method. Then proceed to choose your packages as before.

The difference with this method is that the install will use local files if they are present, only downloading files it can’t find, or more recent versions. And it seems to complete the installation properly.

The problems in my mail below came from choosing “Install from local directory”

I checked the downloads page last week, and they now have the Windows stand-alone installer. It took some time to develop, but I'm glad it's available now.

Thanks to everyone for your assistance.

I believe the standalone installer is for XP as well as Vista since there is no mention it should not. I successfully downloaded and installed it on the XP (see topic "Installing Plugin Installer on Windows XP...at last") it required the additional installation of Microsoft runtime libraries. However, I tried it on a number of pc at the office and for those that couldn't work, I suspect some part of the operating system had been deleted by the anti-virus due to virus attack which means a re-format and fresh installation of XP should do it.

The stand-alone installer did mention the possibility of needing to download something from Microsoft. My computer at work uses XP. After installing QGIS 1.0.2, it did not run. However, after I downloaded the program/update (not sure what exactly it was), QGIS ran with no problem.

I use a 64 bit version of Vista and find the installer doesn't even create the program files(x86) installation folder. It produced a desktop shortcut and installed the data, but nothing resembling an executable. I have downloaded the microsoft add-on but two further installs hasn't provided any change.

I am having the same problem. Not installing the data though, so can't confirm that it is being added. I run the installer (qgis-1.0.2-0.setup.exe) and during the install it says it Skipped: [lots of files]. I only get a shortcut on the desktop and nothing else - no entry in add/remove programs, no folders in programfiles...

Running vista 64bit...

any resolution??

I mentioned in a previous post that it may be neccassary to install a program from Microsoft. Here is the quote from 1.2.0-1 Daphnis Windows installer:

"Note: You may need to install the Microsoft C Runtime Libraries too. If QGIS does not start, get the MSVC libs from here and install them before trying to run QGIS again."

Here is the link to download the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86) - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

I encountered the same problem you did, but after I installed this from Microsoft, and reinstalled QGIS, it successfully installed (without all the "skipping"). I am not using 64-bit Vista, but I would imagine it would work for either 32-bit or 64-bit. Give it a shot and let me know if it works.

It works OK with QGIS-1.0.2-0-Setup.exe (Kore).

For a problem with QGIS-1.3.0-3-No-GrassSetup.exe , I am opening a new specific discussion :
version 1.3.0 Mimas not installing on Windows Vista ?
